Default Action and Fail-Safe List

Default Action And Fail-Safe List

(*1) Action taken when the DTC sets which vehicle speed limit applies

The vehicle speed limit is four stages and it is phased in along with other warning actions. The following is a list of the warning actions and vehicle speed limit on each stage that ECM applies.

Stage 1

Based on the request from the DEF control module, the following warning actions and vehicle speed limit are applied from the ECM.
- The MIL is turned ON.
- The reduced engine power indicator lamp is turned ON.
- The reduced engine power indicator lamp is turned ON.
- The DEF indicator lamp is turned ON.
- The single short beep warning buzzer is sounded. (50 ms once)
- The vehicle speed is limited to 55 MPH (89 km/h).

Stage 2

After Stage 1 is indicated, if the driving is continued another approximately 100 miles (160 km), the following warning actions and vehicle speed limit are applied from the ECM.
- The MIL is continuously turned ON.
- The reduced engine power indicator lamp is continuously turned ON.
- The exhaust system warning lamp is continuously turned ON.
- The DEF indicator lamp is blinked with slow.
- The three short beeps warning buzzer is sounded. (500 ms three times)
- The vehicle speed is limited to 35 MPH (56 km/h).

Stage 3

After Stage 2 is indicated, if the driving is continued further for approximately 65 miles (105 km), the following warning actions and vehicle speed limit are applied from the ECM.
- The MIL is continuously turned ON.
- The reduced engine power indicator lamp is continuously turned ON.
- The exhaust system warning lamp is continuously turned ON.
- The DEF indicator lamp is blinked with quick.
- The three quick beeps warning buzzer is sounded. (150 ms nine times)
- The vehicle speed is limited to 35 MPH (56 km/h).

Stage 4 (2011 MY)

From the Stage 3 status, if the engine is restarted or the vehicle is driven for approximately 35 miles (56 km) and stopped, the following warning actions and vehicle speed limit are applied from the ECM.
- The MIL is continuously turned ON.
- The reduced engine power indicator lamp is continuously turned ON.
- The exhaust system warning lamp is continuously turned ON.
- The DEF indicator lamp is continuously blinked with quick.
- The warning buzzer is continuously sounded.
- The vehicle speed is limited to 5 MPH (8 km/h).

Stage 4 (Except 2011 MY)

There are the following 3 types of conditions which advance the Stage 3 warning state to the Stage 4.
- Regardless of the mileage, when the engine is restarted after the ignition is turned OFF.
- When the vehicle is stopped (the vehicle speed being 0 MPH (0 km/h) after driving 5 miles (8 km) to 33 miles (53 km).
- When the mileage reaches 33 miles (53 km). From the Stage 3 warning status, if the driving is continued for another 33 miles (53 km), the restriction vehicle speed is changed even while driving, and the vehicle speed is gradually reduced down to 5 MPH (98 km/h).

When any of the conditions is met, the following warning actions and vehicle speed limit are applied from the ECM.

Failure Self-Recovery (Except 2011 MY)

The following actions are taken when a failure is self-recovered due to an intermittent or parts removal.

For Stage 1 or 2
When the diagnosis is determined as normal by the DEF control module, the Default Action and Fail-Safe are cancelled at the next drive cycle. Also, after determined as normal, if the failure is detected again within 40 hours, the Default Action and Fail-Safe are set to the Stage 3.

For Stage 3 or 4
Even when the diagnosis is determined as normal, the Default Action and Fail-Safe are not cancelled. Cancellation in IDSS is required.
