Knock Sensor: Description and Operation

Knock Sensor:

Spark knock (detonation) is controlled by the ECM through its control of the electronic ignition system. The ECM will retard ignition timing when it receives a signal from the knock sensor. This allows the engine to use maximum spark advance to improve driveability and fuel economy. Other inputs utilized by the ECM to calculate spark timing include:

Crank angle sensor
Throttle valve or position switch
Vehicle speed sensor
Coolant temperature sensor
Air flow sensor
