Steering Column - Knocking Noise

All Pickup (TF), Amigo (TC) and Rodeo (UC) models.

SERVICE INFORMATION

A knocking sound may be heard from the steering column when the steering wheel is turned from side to side. To eliminate the noise, install a steering shaft repair kit as described in this Service Bulletin.

SERVICE PROCEDURE





Refer to Figure 1 for parts locations.

1. Ensure that the steering wheel position is straight.

2. Apply a setting mark across the universal joint and steering shaft, to reassemble the parts in their original position.

3. Remove steering column from vehicle as described in the appropriate Workshop Manual.

4. Secure the steering column in a bench vise.

5. Remove and discard 2 wire clamps securing the trunnion joint boot. Carefully slide the boot off the joint.

6. Remove and discard the stopper ring. Then remove the lower shaft from the steering shaft assembly.

7. Remove and discard the joint blocks and spring.





8. Using new parts provided in the repair kit (see "Parts Information" section of this Service Bulletin), install the two anti-rattle rubber pieces into the joint block holes as shown in Figure 2. Apply NLGI No. 2 lithium grease to all surfaces of the blocks and inside the joint.

9. Ensure that the steering wheel is in the same position as in Step 1. Install die new spring and die new joint blocks into the joint as shown in Figure 1.

10. Reinstall the lower shaft to the steering shaft assembly.

11. Install the new stopper ring provided in the kit.

NOTE
If the boot becomes damaged during this Service Procedure, replace it with a new boot listed in the "Parts Information" section of this Service Bulletin.

12. Carefully slide the boot over the trunnion joint and secure with the new wire clamps provided in the repair kit. Cut off excess wire length. Fold the wires ends around the circumference of the boot.

13. Reinstall the steering column into the vehicle as described in the appropriate Workshop Manual, aligning the setting marks that were made in Step 2.

14. Road test the vehicle to ensure proper steering operation.

Each kit contains spring, 2 steering shaft joint blocks, 2 anti-rattle rubber pieces, 2 wire clamps and 1 stopper ring.
