Distributor: Service and Repair
Removal
1. High-tension cables.
2. Distributor assembly.
Installation
To install follow the removal procedure in reverse order.
DISASSEMBLY
Distributor Cap
1. Remove the distributor cap fixing screw.
2. Remove the distributor cap and the rotor.
3. Pull the carbon points from the distributor cap.
4. Vacuum Control
- Remove the ground terminal and vacuum control mounting screw.
5. Reluctor
1. Pry loose the retractor outer cover.
2. Insert a screwdriver into the lower side of the reluctor.
3. Pull the reluctor free.
6. Roll Pin
7. Pinion Gear and Gasket
- Break away the staking on the gear set and remove the pin.
- File off staked end of the roll pin, then drive Out the roll pin toward the opposite side.
8. Governor Flyweight and Spring
- Remove the governor weight and the springs from the shaft.
INSPECTION AND REPAIR
- Make the necessary adjustments repairs, and part replacements if excessive wear or damage is discovered during inspection.
Distributor Cap
- Check the distributor cap and rotor for cracks and carbon tracks. Check the distributor cap center contact for wear. Center contact should be 2.2 mm (0.087 in) or longer.
Air Gap
- Using a feeler gauge, measure the air gap between the pick-up coil projections.
Air Gap: 0.3 - 0.5 (0.012 - 0.020)
- Adjust air gap if necessary. Loosen the two screws and move the igniter until the gap is correct. Tighten the two screws and check the air gap.
Governor Control
- Turn the rotor shaft counter-clockwise, release it, and check that the rotor returns slightly clockwise.
REASSEMBLY
Governor Flyweight and Spring
- Attach the governor spring to the shaft spring hanger pin. The smatter tapered ends of the spring (both ends) should be secured to the lower side of the hook.
1. Rotor Shaft
- Carefully align the rotor shaft (1) notches and the distributor shaft (2) notches when installing the rotor shaft.
2. Pinion Gear and Gasket.
3. Roil Pin.
1. Carefully align the pinion gear pin hole and distributor shaft pin hole.
2. Set the pinion gear with gasket to the distributor shaft.
3. Insert the roll pin into the pin hole.
4. Stake the roll pin on both sides.
4. Breaker Plate, Magnet and Unit
- Carefully align the scribe marks on the breaker plate and the housing.
5. Reluctor
- The roll pin notch and the retractor notch must be parallel when the roll pin is inserted into the retractor.
6. Vacuum Control
- Apply vacuum and check that vacuum advance moves.
