Automatic Choke

CHOKE OPERATION INSPECTION
NOTE: Engine MUST be cold to properly check automatic choke operation (coolant temperature less than 68~F (20~C).

- Remove top of air cleaner box assembly.

- Depress accelerator pedal once, then release.

- Choke should close when throttle valve is opened.

- Start engine and let idle.

- Choke should open very slightly when engine is started, and engine should run at a fast idle.

- Allow engine to run for several minutes, during which time rev the engine slightly about every 30 seconds or so, to make sure that the throttle lever comes off of fast idle as the engine warms up.

- Choke should open slowly as engine warms up and be fully open by the time the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

- If choke does not operate as described, check choke assembly for proper installation, and see ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES.

Electric Choke Heater:

ELECTRIC CHOKE HEATER
- Disconnect the electrical terminal.
- Using an ohm meter, measure the resistance between ground and heater terminal.

RESISTANCE VALUE
1.1 - 3.1 ohms at 20° C (68° F)

- Replace if resistance differs.

Choke Piston (Pull-off Diaphragm):

CHOKE PISTON (Pull-Off Diaphragm)
- Disconnect vacuum hose from fitting.
- Using a vacuum pump, apply at least 10 in.Hg vacuum to piston.
- Control rod should move and diaphragm should hold vacuum.
- Replace piston if results differ.
