Air Injection: Testing and Inspection

Air Injection Reactor System:

AIR INJECTION REACTOR SYSTEM TESTING

1. With engine at normal operating temperature, air should flow from the air management valve (AMV) to the air manifold for the first 3 seconds after engine start. Air flow should then switch to the air cleaner hose.
2. The system is functioning properly if it operates as described. At engine idle, vacuum signal to the AMV should be 10 in.Hg.
3. If the system does not function as described in step 1, turn ignition "ON" and engine "OFF." Disconnect AMV electrical connector and connect a test light between connector terminals. If test light lights, check for short in wire from AMV solenoid to ECM and repair as necessary. If wire is okay, replace ECM.
4. If test light does not light, ground ALDL connector by installing a jumper wire between white and black wires of ALDL (located behind a kick panel near the ECM).
5. If test light now lights, check for a poor AMV solenoid electrical connector or faulty solenoid. If connector and solenoid are okay, replace AMV.
6. If test light still does not light, connect test light between AMV solenoid terminal "A" (white/yellow wire) and ground. If test light does not light, check for bad 10 amp fuse in interior fuse box.
7. If test light lights, check for an open in wire from solenoid to ECM (light green/black wire). If wire is okay, check resistance of solenoid windings. If resistance is less than 20 ohms, replace AMV.

AIR INJECTION PUMP INSPECTION

Check the air pump for abnormal noise or broken components and replace if found defective. The pump is not serviceable and must be replaced as a unit.

Check Valve:

CHECK VALVE TESTING

Remove check valve from the air manifold. Test for leakage by blowing air into the valve from the air pump side and from the air manifold side. A good valve will only pass air from the pump side. The valve is defective if air passes from the manifold side and should be replaced. A small amount of air leakage may be overlooked.

AIR HOSE AND INJECTION PIPE INSPECTION

Check around the air manifold for air leakage with the engine running at 2000 rpm. If air is leaking from the nozzle sleeve nuts, tighten them.
Check and replace hoses if found to be fatigued or cracked. Also check hose joints and clamps. Be sure hoses are not rubbing against adjacent components.
