RODEO (UC) REAR HATCH RELEASE INOPERATION

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1991 Rodeo (UC) models.

SERVICE INFORMATION

Road vibration could cause the tailgate handle pivot mounting screw to loosen, resulting in rear hatch release inoperation.

To eliminate this condition, this Service Bulletin contains procedures for opening the rear hatch when the release is inoperable, and for tightening the tailgate handle pivot mounting screw.

NOTE

On models equipped with an electric rear hatch release, the hatch will only open when:

- the rear wiper is OFF, and in the park position.

- on M/T models, the parking brake is set.

- on A/T models, the transmission is in PARK or NEUTRAL.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. If the rear hatch release is inoperable, open the hatch as follows:

a. Trace the template shown in Figure 1 and cut along the dotted lines.

b. Position the template on the tailgate door trim, as shown in Figure 2.

c. Access the lock as follows:

- Drill a hole in the plastic trim cover at the template target point, using a 5 mm drill bit.

- Remove the drill and use a punch to mark the sheet metal at the target point. This will prevent the drill from "walking".

- Drill a hole in the sheet metal at the target point. Use care to avoid damaging the latch.

d. Insert a small screwdriver through the hole and push on the locking mechanism to release the upper hatch.

2. Tighten the tailgate handle pivot mounting screw (Figure 3) as follows:

a. Remove the tailgate door trirn pad as described in the appropriate Workshop Manual. Carefully pull back the waterproof patch to expose the inside of the tailgate handle.

b. Remove the pivot mounting screw and apply a small amount of Loctite 242 or equivalent to the screw threads. Torque to 6 ft.lbs.

c. Reinstall the waterproof patch and tailgate door trim pad as described in the appropriate Workshop Manual.

3. Cover the previously drilled hole in the trim pad with a plastic rivet (see "Parts Information" in this Service Bulletin).
