Ignition Timing
NOTE: Always check Vehicle Emissions Control Information label on hood when adjusting timing. Make all adjustments with engine at normal operating temperature, choke full open, air cleaner installed, all accessories OFF, and transmission in neutral.1. Set parking brake and block drive wheels.
2. Connect timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire.
Canister Purge Line / EGR Vacuum Line:
3. Disconnect canister purge line and EGR vacuum line and plug both.
4. Place transmission shift lever in NEUTRAL and start engine.
Timing Mark:
5. Check ignition timing at crankshaft pulley. Should be:
6° BTDC
900 rpm
Adjustment Bolt:
6. If out of specification, loosen mounting bolt and rotate distributor housing to adjust timing.
7. After adjustment, tighten bolt to:
14 ft lb (19 Nm)
NOTE: When tighting bolt, be sure distributor does not turn with mounting bolt.
Idle Compensator Vacuum Line:
8. Seal off hot idle compensator vacuum hose by bending the hose.
Adjusting Screws:
9. Adjust idle speed screw to obtain proper idle speed. Should be:
900 rpm
10. If equipped with A/C, turn A/C on max cold, high blower and open throttle momentarily to assure solenoid is fully extended. Adjust screw on throttle lever to:
900 rpm
11. Turn A/C off and release hot idle compensator hose.
12. Stop engine, unplug and refit vacuum hoses.
