Compressor Clutch: Service and Repair
MAGNETIC CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
REMOVAL
Preparation:
Attach the compressor to holding fixture (J25008-A) and clamp the holding fixture in a vise.
1. Shaft nut
- Use holding tool (J-33027) to prevent the magnetic clutch from rotating, then remove the shaft nut.
2. Magnetic clutch
- Thread the remover (J-37707) into the magnetic clutch. Hold the body of the remover with a wrench and turn the center screw into the remover body, then remove the magnetic clutch.
3. Shaft key
4. Snap ring
- Using snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring.
5. Magnetic clutch pulley
- Install guide (J-25031-1) over the end of the compressor shaft and seat it on the front head of the compressor.
- Install puller (J-25287) onto the magnetic clutch pulley until the puller arms engage the bottom edge of magnetic clutch pulley. Hold the puller arms in place and tighten the puller screw to remove the magnetic clutch pulley.
6. Bearing
- Place the magnetic clutch pulley face down on a flat surface. Press the bearing out of the magnetic clutch pulley with remover (J-9398- A) and drive handle (J-8092).
- It's not necessary to remove the staking in order to free the bearing from the magnetic clutch pulley.
7. Field coil
- Mark the location of the clutch coil terminals on the compressor.
- Install guide (J-25031-1) over end of the compressor shaft and seat it on the front head of the compressor.
- Install puller (J-25287) onto the field coil until the puller arms engage the bottom edge of the field coil.
- Tighten the forcing screw to remove the field coil.
INSTALLATION
7. Field coil
- Install the field coil on the neck of the front head.
- Position the coil terminals as marked during removal.
6. Bearing
- Place the magnetic clutch pulley face down onto a clean, flat surface.
- Do not support the pulley by resting the pulley rim on a flat surface during the bearing installation or the pulley face will be bent.
- Align the new bearing squarely with the pulley bore and using installer (J-9481-A) with drive handle (J-8092), then press the bearing fully into the pulley.
- Stake the bearing into place at a 45-degree angel, similar to the original.
- Use 12 new stake locations on the rotor approximately 30-degrees apart.
- The stake metal should not contact the outer race of the bearing to prevent the possibility of distorting the outer race.
5. Magnetic clutch pulley
- Position the magnetic clutch pulley on the front head.
- Drive the magnetic clutch pulley onto the front head by using installer (J-9481-A) and drive handle (J-8092).
4. Snap ring
- Install the snap ring by using snap ring pliers.
3. Shaft key
2. Magnetic clutch
- Be sure the frictional surface of the magnetic clutch and pulley are clean before installing the magnetic clutch.
- Install the shaft key into the magnetic clutch key groove. Allow the key to project approx 4.8 mm (0.19 in) out of the keyway.
- The shaft key is curved slightly to provide an interference fit in shaft key groove of the magnetic clutch.
- Place the magnetic clutch onto the compressor shaft.
- Hold the installer (J-37707) with a wrench and tighten the center nut. Press the magnetic clutch on to the shaft.
- Tighten until there is 0.5-1.0 mm (0.020-0.040 in.) gap between the frictional surface of the magnetic clutch and pulley.
1. Shaft nut
- Using holding tool (J-33027) to prevent the magnetic clutch from rotating.
- Tighten the shaft nut to the specified torque.
Torque N.m (lb. ft.) 14 (10)
- Shaft nut can not reused. Always replace with a new one.
