Timing Belt: Service and Repair

TIMING BELT REMOVAL

Preparation:
- Battery negative cable.
- Rotate crankshaft to position No. 1 cylinder to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke by aligning camshaft pulley timing mark.

1. Remove the power steering pump drive belt.
2. Remove the air conditioning compressor drive belt.
3. Remove the air conditioning compressor drive belt tensioner.
4. Remove the generator drive belt.
5. Remove the cooling fan.

NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the cooling fan from the radiator fan shroud.

6. Remove the water pump pulley.
7. Remove the power steering pump.
8. Remove the starter motor.

9. Remove the crankshaft pulley fixing bolt.
Use special tool J-38674 to remove the pulley fixing bolt.
10. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
11. Remove the timing belt cover.
12. Remove the timing belt.
Use a screwdriver or a pair of pliers to remove the tension spring and remove the timing belt.

TIMING BELT HANDLING PRECAUTIONS

1. Do not bend the belt to a radius of less than 20 mm (0.79 in.).
Do not twist or bend the belt. Doing so will damage the glass fiber imbedded in the belt. Timing belt precision will be adversely affected.
2. Do not store the belt in direct sunlight or in an area where it will be exposed to high temperatures.
3. Do not allow the stored belt to become dirty.
4. Do not use sharp metal tools to stretch or force the belt into position during installation.

INSTALLATION

1. Install the timing belt.

1) Align the crankshaft timing pulley mark with the oil seal retainer setting mark.

2) Install the timing belt to the crankshaft timing pulley (1), the oil pump timing pulley (2), the camshaft timing pulley (3), and the tension pulley (4) in that order.

3) Loosen the tensioner bolt "B".
4) Allow the tension spring to pull the timing belt as far as possible.
5) Once again, temporarily tighten the tensioner bolt "B".
6) Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise two full turns (720°).
a) Check that the crankshaft timing pulley mark is aligned with the oil seal retainer setting mark.

b) Check that the camshaft timing pulley setting mark is aligned with the front cover setting mark.
7) Loosen the tensioner bolt "B".
8) Allow the tension spring to pull the timing belt as far as possible.
9) Tighten the tensioner bolt "B" to the specified torque.

Torque: 19 N.m (14 lb.ft.)

2. Install the timing belt cover.
Tighten the timing cover fixing bolts to specified torque.

Torque: 6 N.m (32 lb.in.)

3. Install the crankshaft pulley.
4. Install the crankshaft pulley fixing bolt.
Tighten the bolt to specified torque using the special tool J-38674.

Torque: 118 Nm (87 lb.ft.)

5. Install the starter motor.
Tighten the fixing bolt and nut to specified torque.

Torque: 86 N.m (63 lb.ft.)

6. Install the power steering pump.
7. Install the water pump pulley.
8. Install the cooling fan.
Tighten the fixing nuts to specified torque.

Torque: 26 N.m (20 lb.ft.)

9. Install and adjust generator drive belt tension.

Deflection 10 mm (0.3937 in.)

10. Install the air conditioning compressor drive belt tensioner.
11. Install and adjust air conditioning compressor drive belt tension.

Deflection 10 mm (0.3937 in.)

12. Install and adjust power steering pump drive belt tension.

Deflection 10 mm (0.3937 in.)
