Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information. On models with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.2. Disconnect battery ground.
3. Drain cooling system.
4. Remove upper and lower intake manifolds.
5. Remove exhaust manifold.
6. Disconnect cooling fan assembly.
7. Remove drive belt.
8. Remove cooling fan pulley.
9. Remove heater hoses from heater core and thermostat housing.
10. Disconnect electrical connector on temperature sensor at thermostat housing.
11. Remove upper radiator hose.
12. Remove thermostat housing assembly.
13. Disconnect alternator electrical connections.
14. Remove air conditioning compressor and bracket.
15. Remove alternator, power steering pump and bracket.
16. Remove valve covers and pushrods.
17. Remove engine lift bracket from rear of engine.
18. Remove cylinder head bolts and studs.
19. Remove cylinder head.
20. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Clean carbon deposits from combustion chamber.
b. Ensure mating surfaces of cylinder head and block are clean. Do not use a sealer.
c. Ensure cylinder head gasket is installed with words THIS SIDE UP showing.
d. Coat threads of all cylinder head bolts with sealing compound and assemble within 15 minutes.

e. Using sequence shown in Fig. 16, torque long cylinder head bolts to 46 ft. lbs. and short bolts to 43 ft. lbs., then tighten all bolts an additional 90° in sequence.
