Backlash Adjustment
Install the differential case, bearing cups, spacers and shims.1. Rotate case several times to seat bearings.
2. Install dial indicator with magnetic base onto case.
3. Place indicator stem at heel end of one tooth. Set indicator so stem is in line with gear rotation and perpendicular to tooth angle.
4. Install differential caps and bolts and torque to 55 ft. lbs.
5. Pinion must be held stationary when checking backlash. Check and record at three or four points around the gear. All readings should be within .002 inch of each other.
6. Backlash at minimum point should be .005-.009 inches for new gear sets.
7. If backlash is out of specification, move ring gear in or out from pinion by removing shims. To maintain correct axle side bearing preload the shims are removed from one side and an equally sized shim is added to the other.
8. Remove bearing caps and shim packs when correct backlash is achieved.
9. On left side, select 0.004 inch larger shim than the one removed and insert between spacer and bearing race. Install left bearing cap and bolt but do not tighten. Repeat for right side.
10. Torque bolts to 55 ft. lbs., recheck backlash and correct as necessary.
