1994-98 Trooper (UX) models equipped with Limited Slip Differential (LSD).

SERVICE INFORMATION

As of May 1995, a new type of LSD lubricant was introduced which contains friction modifiers, necessary for proper LSD function. At the Fujisawa assembly plant, the LSD units were filled with this new LSD lubricant. This new LSD lubricant, however, is not sold in the United States. Therefore, the required LSD lubricant additive must be added to the gear oil on subsequent refills.

Condition:
During turning maneuvers, some affected vehicles may experience a chattering noise and/or excessive vibration from the rear LSD. This condition may have appeared following the replacement of the rear Limited Slip Differential gear oil.

Possible Cause:
This condition may be due to refilling the rear LSD without adding the required LSD lubricant additive.

Correction:
To prevent this condition from occurring on vehicles equipped with the LSD units, be certain to add Limited Slip Differential Lubricant Additive (Part No. 8-01052-358-0) when it is necessary to change the rear differential GL-5 lubricant.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Use the following refill service procedure for adding the LSD Lubricant Additive (Friction Modifier) to the rear Limited Slip Differential.

1. Drain rear differential lubricant.

2. Add 4 oz. (entire contents of bottle) of LSD lubricant additive to the differential.

3. Refill with new GL-5 LSD lubricant. Refer to the Workshop Manual for appropriate lubricant viscosity and proper refill capacity.

^ Be sure to torque the gear oil drain and filler plugs to 78 N.m. (58 lb. ft.).

4. Distribute the lubricant and additive throughout the LSD unit as follows:

^ In a non-traffic area, slowly drive the vehicle in a tight circle for approximately one minute, then repeat in the other direction.
