Service Procedure

1. Remove the driver's kick panel.

2. Remove the driver's dashboard lower cover.





^ Remove the two mounting screws for the hood release lever and the mounting screw on the lower right corner of the cover (see figure 1).





^ Pull the hood release lever forward and turn it sideways to unclip it from the cover (see figure 2).

^ Gently pry out the cover to release the four clips, unplug the electrical connectors, and remove the cover.

3. Remove the seven (7) mounting screws in the lower steering column cover, remove the upper and lower cover.

4. Set the parking brake and move the shift lever to "L" position and remove the ashtray.





5. Remove the four (4) clips and one (1) screw from the lower cluster assembly, then unplug the cigarette lighter connectors (see figure 3).

6. Remove two (2) rear console screws, and unplug the connectors from the POWER and WINTER switches.

7. On 4WD models remove the knob from the transfer control lever.

8. Remove the six (6) front console screws, console, and unplug the connectors from the accessory power outlet.

9. Move the shift lever to the "P" position, and then turn the ignition switch to ACC.





10. Verify the shift interlock cable mounting screw is tight and secure (see figure 4).





11. Press and hold the shift lever push-button, check the condition of the spring pin cover in the lock assembly (see figure 5).

^ If the cover is loose, out of position or missing, disregard this bulletin and replace the lock cylinder assembly (refer to the appropriate service manual for the replacement procedures).

^ If the cover is in good condition, release the shift lever push-button and proceed to step 12.





12. Push the white plastic cable slider toward the cable until it stops (see figure 6).





13. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (see figure 7).

^ If you cannot turn the switch to LOCK because the cable slider is blocking the white plastic interlock pin, go to step 14.

^ If you cannot turn the switch to LOCK, and the cable slider is clear of the white plastic interlock pin, troubleshoot the lock cylinder assembly.





14. Move the cable slider so it clears the interlock pin, and then turn the ignition switch to LOCK (figure 8).





15. Pry out the shift lock cable adjuster clip and snap it back, into place. The raised "T" on the side of the clip must face up (figure 9).

16. Turn the ignition switch to ACC and push the cable slider towards the cable until it stops. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK.

^ If you can turn the switch to LOCK, the shift lock cable is adjusted correctly. Press firmly on the shift lever push-button, pull down the shift lever to make sure the lever is locked into the P position. Go to step 19.

^ If you cannot turn the switch to LOCK, or it still feels "Notchy" when you turn it, more adjusting is required. Go to step 17.





17. Tear off the corner of a business card or some other suitable material approximately .010 mm thick (feeler/wire gauge). Insert the card piece between the cable slider and the interlock pin (figure 10).

18. Pry out the adjuster clip, then snap it back into place. Remove the card piece (feeler/wire gauge) make sure the ignition switch turns to LOCK, then press firmly on the shift lever push-button and pull down on the shift lever to make sure the lever is locked in "P" position.

19. Plug in the accessory power outlet connectors and reinstall the front console.

20. On 4WD models, reinstall the transfer control lever knob.

21. Plug in the POWER and WINTER switch connectors and reinstall the rear console.

22. Move the shift lever to the "L" position, plug in the cigarette lighter connectors and reinstall the lower cluster assembly.

23. Reinstall the upper and lower steering column cover.

24. Reinstall the driver's dashboard lower cover.

25. Reinstall the driver's kick panel.
