Interior - Rear Cup Holder Won't Stay Up/Falls Down

Trooper (UX) Rear Cup Holder Does Not Stay in the "UP" Position

ISSUE DATE: MAY, 2002

Affected Vehicles
1998-2002 Trooper (UX) equipped with rear seat cup holder.

Service Information

Condition:

Some customers may experience the rear cup holder not staying in the up position (closed position) or falling down (open position) when driving over a bump.

Possible Cause:

Poor fit between the magnet and the retaining plate.

Correction:

Follow the procedure in this bulletin to add a spacer behind the retaining magnet for a more secure fit.

NOTE:
It is not necessary to replace the existing cup holder assembly to repair this condition.

Service Procedure





1. With cup holder in the down position, remove the two screws holding the plastic retaining piece in place (Figure 1).

2. Remove the cup holder tray from the assembly.





3. Remove the screw and metal retaining plate from the cup holder tray (Figure 2).





4. Obtain an M4 washer, or equivalent, from a local source. Place the washer under the retaining plate (Figure 3).

5. Reinstall the metal cup holder tray retaining plate.

6. Install the cup holder tray into the cup holder assembly.

7. Install the plastic retaining piece with the two screws.

8. Check cup holder operation for proper alignment.
