ACTION:
Front hub end float should be adjusted using the following procedure:
NOTE:
Before performing this operation, place an absorbent cloth around the brake fluid reservoir cap.
^ Remove the front wheels.
^ Gently pry the brake pads away from the discs. Make sure that the disc can rotate freely without coming in contact with the pads.
^ Remove the hub grease cap, (Fig. 1 A).
^ Install a dial test indicator to the hub, (Fig. 2).
^ Grasp the hub firmly. Push the hub in and then pull it out. Note the reading on the dial.
NOTE:
Fig. 1 shows an XJS front hub and Fig. 2 shows a Sedan front hub. All procedures apply to both models.
^ If the reading is within 0.001" - 0.003", no adjustment is necessary.
^ If adjustment is necessary, remove the cotter pin and nut cover, (Fig. 1 B & C).
^ Adjust end float as necessary to give a reading of 0.001" - 0.003".
^ Align the hub nut cover and secure with a new cotter pin.
^ Check the front hub end float again.
^ Install the grease cap.
^ Perform the above procedure on the opposite front hub.
^ Install the road wheels. Make sure that the wheel nuts are tightened to 65-75 ft.lbs.
^ Before moving the vehicle, pump the brake pedal to re-set the brake pads. Remove cloth from around brake fluid reservoir cap.
