Drive Belt: Service and Repair

NOTE: SEE FIG. 4 FOR BELT ROUTING.

1. Remove right hand air cleaner cover.
2. Loosen the fan belt idler mounting and adjusting bolts. Remove fan belt.
3. Loosen the power steering mounting and adjusting bolts. Remove power steering belt.
4. Loosen air pump mounting and adjusting bolts. WARNING: DO NOT LOOSEN BOLTS TO THE EXTENT THAT THEY BIND ON THE AIR PUMP PULLEY.
5. Remove air pump drive belt from vehicle. Match replacement belt to original belt.
6. Install replacement belt onto engine.
7. Adjust belt until a force of approximately 6.4 lbs (2.9 kg) causes a deflection of about .22 inch (5.6 mm) in the belt at the midpoint between the air pump and the air conditioning compressor, Fig. 4.
8. Tighten the adjusting locknut and air pump mounting bolts.
9. Install power steering belt, and adjust belt until a force of approximately 6.5 lbs (3 kg) causes a deflection of about .17 inch (4.3 mm). Tighten all power steering mounting and adjusting bolts.
10. Install fan belt, and adjust belt until a force of approximately 6.4 lbs (2.9 kg) causes a deflection of about .17 inch (4.3 mm). Tighten all fan idler mounting and adjusting bolts.
11. Refit right hand air cleaner cover.
