Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

Note: Be sure converters have cooled before handling.

Left Side Downpipe Converter
1. Remove air cleaner element.
2. From beneath vehicle, remove steering bellows heat shield, mounting bracket, and front body mounted heat shield.
3. Disconnect exhaust intermediate pipe. Be sure it is adequately supported.
4. Remove nuts securing steering hose heat shield and exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold. Move heat shield forward and reach in from top of car to remove.
5. Remove exhaust pipe/catalyst assembly. This can be accomplished if the steering is turned all the way to the left.
6. Reverse procedure to install. Fit new sealing rings to prevent leakage. Tighten connections in a diagonal sequence to prevent distortion.

Right Side Downpipe Converter
1. Remove air cleaner element.
2. From beneath vehicle, remove steering bellows heat shield, mounting bracket, and front body mounted heat shield.
3. Disconnect exhaust intermediate pipes. Be sure it is adequately supported.
4. Remove nuts securing downpipe to exhaust manifold.
5. Remove converter.
6. Reverse procedure to install. Fit new sealing rings to prevent leakage. Tighten connections in a diagonal sequence to prevent distortion.
