Engine Oil Leaks - Improved Gaskets/Bolts - Installation Instructions

ISSUE:

Revised gaskets and bolts are incorporated on XJS vehicles to improve engine sealing beginning with engine number 8S86317SA. The revised gaskets have a sandwiched construction of fiber/metal/fiber.

Revised bolts have flanged heads to prevent loosening.

ACTION:

For complaints of engine leaks, clean the affected area and run the engine to identify the leak source.

Note the engine number stamped at the top rear of the engine block and repair leaks as follows:

For engines up to number 8S86316SA:

^ If the leak is from the oil filter housing gasket or the sump sandwich plate gasket, then replace the oil filter housing gasket and sump sandwich plate gasket as a set.

^ If the leak is from the left or right cam cover or seal, then replace the left and right cam cover gaskets and seals as a set.

For engines after number 8S86316SA:

^ Replace only the leaking gasket.

Installation Instructions:

NOTE:
Gasket surfaces must be clean and dry. Do NOT use RTV or other sealants, except as noted on the following page. Do NOT use a washer on revised (flanged) bolts.

^ Sump gasket - Install revised bolts and torque to 21-27 N-m (15.5-20 ft.lbs.). Use the original bolt through the oil cooler line bracket.

^ Sump sandwich plate gasket - Install revised bolts and torque to 21-27 N-m (15.5-20 ft.lbs.). Do NOT use RTV at the timing cover or rear main bearing joint lines.

NOTE:
RTV sealant continues to be used to seal the rear main bearing cap in the engine block.

^ Cam cover gaskets - Apply RTV sealant ONLY to the rubber half round seal at the rear of the cam carrier. Install revised bolts and torque to 9.5-11.5 N-m (7-8.5 ft.lbs.).

^ Throttle body gaskets - Install gaskets with tab facing downwards.

^ Water pump elbow gasket - Install gasket with black side towards the cylinder block.

^ Top cover (valley) gasket - Install gasket with black side towards the cylinder block.

^ Timing cover gaskets - After installation, trim the ends of the gaskets flush with the block.
