NOTE:
This bulletin is being issued to all dealers however, only California vehicles/dealers are affected by the recall.

The California Air Resources Board has determined that 1986 XJ6/VDP vehicles do not comply with the California oxides of nitrogen (NOX) emissions standards.

To enable these vehicles to comply with California emissions standards, a heated oxygen sensor must be installed on all 1986 XJ6/VDP vehicles registered in California.

NOTE:
This recall does not apply to vehicles registered outside California.

Dealer Vehicle Campaign List

"Dealer Campaign List" not included listing affected vehicles which were invoiced to you. This list applies to California dealers only.

If a campaign list is not enclosed, then (according to our records) you did not receive any of the affected vehicles.

You may be required to perform recall campaign work on a vehicle that was not invoiced to your dealership (i.e. transient owner, etc.).

If this occurs, normal repair procedure should be followed.

Owner Notification

Beginning September 11, 1989, all owners of record will be issued recall notifications via first class mail. Included will also be a letter advising them of this condition. (A copy of the owner's letter is shown).

Owners will be asked to contact their selling dealer (or nearest authorized dealer) and make an appointment for repair work. They will also be asked to sign and return the "Campaign Claim" form to the dealer.

NOTE:
If a customer has not responded after four weeks from the campaign mailing date, the dealer must contact the customer reminding them of this recall.

Recall Campaign B339 repair procedure:

^ Disconnect battery.





^ Locate the oxygen sensor in the exhaust system down pipe (Fig. 1A) and disconnect the sensor harness.

^ Remove and discard oxygen sensor.

^ Clean the sealing face and install the new oxygen sensor to the exhaust down pipe.

^ Connect the existing harness and new link harness multi-plugs to the oxygen sensor harness.








^ Route the link harness along the air conditioning return hose and across the bulkhead (Fig. 2, 3) to the fuel pump relay (Fig. 3 B).

^ Secure the harness using supplied tie straps, (Fig. 2, 3).

^ Position the fuel pump relay (Fig. 3 B) and relay base away from the bulkhead and remove the relay from the base.

^ Position the link harness green/white cable lucar connector into position 87A for the relay base, (Fig. 3 A).

^ Install the fuel pump relay to the relay base. Install the base and relay to the bulkhead.

^ Route the link harness ground eyelet to the engine inlet manifold. Tighten the ground mounting bolt.

^ Reconnect the battery and reset clock.

^ Test the exhaust pipe CO level with the engine idling at normal operating temperature.

NOTE:
The CO level should not exceed 0.2%.

^ Insert your Zone and Dealer number in the boxes provided on a "B339" campaign completion label. Adhere the label to the upper crossmember on the underside of the hood.

NOTE:
Ensure that the Parts Manager receives a copy of this bulletin.

Replacement parts will be shipped to you (chargeable) by your Zone Office. Initial parts supply covering 50% of your vehicle park will arrive at your dealership by the campaign launch date. Reimbursement for labor and parts will be through the normal campaign system. Adequate supplies of "B339" campaign completion labels are not included with this bulletin.

NOTE:
Complete the applicable "Campaign Claim" form (refer to Warranty Manual, section I). Insert in the "Repair Code" box on the "campaign Claim" the appropriate repair code.
