Upper Steering Column

WARNING: BEFORE COMMENCING ANY WORK ON OR AROUND AIRBAG, DISCONNECT BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND DISARM AIRBAG SYSTEM AS DESCRIBED UNDER ``AIRBAG, SERVICE AND REPAIR.''

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and disarm airbag system as described under ``Airbag System Disarming.''
2. Remove driver's side dash liner, then remove steering wheel as described under ``Steering Wheel, Replace'' in the Electrical Section.
3. Remove steering wheel spline adapter ring.
4. Disconnect column switch gear harness block connectors.
5. Remove upper column to universal joint securing nut and bolt.
6. Remove universal joint from steering column.
7. Remove screws securing column lower mounting to bracket.
8. Remove upper column assembly from vehicle.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Always use new shear lock bolts.
b. Torque support bracket mounting bolts to 15-16 ft. lbs.
c. Torque steering wheel shaft nut to 25-33 ft. lbs.
