6 Speed Transmission - Harsh Shifts -
Adaptive Shift Strategy Drift -
Reprogram TCM & ECM
Issue:
On some 2003-06 XK vehicles within the above VIN range, customers may have a concern of harsh transmission shifts, particularly 3-2, 2-1 roll out and 1-2 upshifts.
This can be caused by the adaptive shift strategy drifting over time, causing higher than normal clutch pressures.
To eliminate this concern, the transmission adaptations must be cleared and the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and the Engine Control Module (ECM) must be reconfigured using the Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) with software release JTP 759 CD42 or later.
Action:
In case of a verified customer complaint of the above condition, carry out the Transmission Control Module (TCM) adaptation clear, and the (TCM) re-configuration using the WDS/IDS with software release JTP 759/42 or IDS DVD42 or later as described below.
Note:
Inform the customer that after the adaptation clear and reconfiguration, the transmission shift quality will improve as the transmission adapts to the customer's driving requirements.
SERVICE INSTRUCTION
Note:
Ensure WDS is loaded with software release JTP 759/42 or IDS DVD42 or later. The vehicles battery must be above 12.1 volts.
1. Position WDS/IDS alongside vehicle, switch unit "ON" and allow software to load.
2. Check that the intake air ducting is secure.
3. Ensure the ignition is switched "OFF", parking brake is "ON" and the transmission selector lever is in park.
4. Connect diagnostic unit to vehicle data link connector (DLC).
5. Enter VIN and navigate to DTC monitor, read and clear all DTCs, then navigate to configuration main menu.
6. From the configuration main menu select "Special applications", then select Transmission control module "Adaptation Clear", and then run "Application".
7. After the adaptation clear has been carried out, select and run re-configure existing "TCM" application from the configuration menu.
8. After the re-configuration of the TCM is complete, switch "OFF" tester, disconnect from vehicle and return WDS/IDS to original location.
Carry out the adaptation drive cycle road test:
Note:
This process must be carried out in normal mode (not sports mode). On a flat road, the transmission fluid temperature must be above 60° C (140° f) and below 100° C (212° f) (vehicle at normal operating temperature will ensure that the transmission fluid temperature is above 60° C (140° f)).
9. Accelerate from rest with light throttle (do not exceed the upper rev limit in appendix 1).
1-2, 2-3, 3-4 shifts must occur with engine speed between the following limits:.
Note:
Do not move the accelerator pedal during shifts.
^ 4.2L N/A Prior VIN A37132 1450 - 1600 rpm
^ 4.2L N/A From VIN A37133 1550 - 1700 rpm
10. Continue to accelerate gently to 50mph (80km/h) 50 that transmission shifts into 5th gear.
11. Go into overrun and let the transmission shift down into 4th gear without braking.
12. Brake gently to a standstill and hold footbrake on for at least 15 seconds.
13. This process should be carried out at least five times.
