CONDITION SUMMARY:
STEERING WHEEL ALIGNMENT DIAGNOSIS
Situation:
This bulletin is to provide diagnostic clarification for steering wheel alignment. Steering wheel alignment may be required during the initial vehicle preparation inspection road test or following a customer complaint about a vehicle that has only recently entered service and does not show evidence of any impact damage.
Action:
If the steering wheel appears misaligned and there is no evidence of impact damage, refer to the Repair Procedure detailed in this bulletin to evaluate steering wheel misalignment and prevent unnecessary adjustments to the steering wheel.

NOTE:

DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
EVALUATE STEERING WHEEL ALIGNMENT
1. Raise the vehicle on a suitable lift.
2. Remove the vehicle undertray
3. With assistance, rotate the steering wheel to align the steering column to the boss on the steering rack pinion housing. (Figure 1)
4. Lower the vehicle.
5. Visually check the alignment of the steering wheel.
6. If the steering wheel alignment is less than +/-3°, no further action is required.
ALIGN STEERING WHEEL
WARNING:
The safety precautions detailed in the Workshop Manual relating to Supplementary Restraint Systems (SRS) must be adhered to.
NOTE:
Global Technical Reference (GTR) lookup sequence is as follows:

1. If the steering wheel alignment is greater than +/-3°, photograph the misalignment.
2. Refer to GTR section 501-20B: Supplemental Restraint System operation 76.73.39 and remove the Driver Air Bag Module from the steering wheel.

3. Refer to GTR section 211-04: Steering Column operation 57.60.01 and remove the steering wheel.
4. Adjust the steering wheel to correct alignment.
5. Refer to GTR section 211-04: Steering Column operation 57.60.01 and install the steering wheel.
6. Refer to GTR section 501-20B: Supplemental Restraint System operation 76.73.39 and install the Driver Air Bag Module from the steering wheel.
7. Raise the vehicle on a suitable lift.
8. Install the vehicle undertray.
9. Road test the vehicle to confirm the steering wheel alignment is within the +/- 3° tolerance, when driving straight ahead on a level surface, and that the vehicle steering alignment is correct.
NOTE:
Any other steering alignment repairs are to be carried out as a separate Warranty Claim. Vehicle geometry machine print outs from before and after any steering alignment adjustments are to be submitted with warranty claim.
10. If the steering wheel is straight and level, and the vehicle does not track correctly during the road test, perform the following:
^ Reset the front individual toe to specification relative to the rear axle thrust line while maintaining the straight steering wheel position (i.e. Four-wheel alignment).
^ Road test the vehicle to confirm the steering wheel alignment is within the +/- 3° tolerance when driving straight ahead on a level surface, and that the vehicle alignment is correct.
11. Raise an Electronic Product Quality Report (EPQR) with the following information:
^ Photographic evidence of the alignment error, where possible.
^ Details as to the extent of steering wheel misalignment that was corrected.
^ An indication of the degree of initial steering wheel misalignment by stating the degree that corresponds most accurately to the misalignments (6°, 12°, 18° or 24°) illustrated in Figure 2.
