Body - A-Pillar 'Creak' Noise

A-Pillar Creak Noise

CONDITION SUMMARY:
Situation:
A creak noise from the right-hand (RH) A-pillar may be heard from inside the vehicle.

Cause:
This may be caused by the bonded body panels at the seam joint.

CAUTION:
To avoid cross-contamination (galvanic corrosion), this repair must be carried out using either a new unused drill bit or an aluminum repair-only drill bit.

Action:
In the event of a customer concern of the above, refer to the Repair Procedure outlined below to perform an A-pillar creak repair.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

PERFORM A-PILLAR CREAK REPAIR

CAUTION:
To avoid cross-contamination (galvanic corrosion), this repair must be carried out using either a new unused drill bit or an aluminum repair-only drill bit.

1. Refer to Workshop Manual section 303-14C / D: Electronic
Engine Controls, and remove the Engine control module
(ECM).

2. Using suitable tape, seal the air box to avoid swarf contamination.




3. From the panel edge, measure 10mm.

^ Using a suitable marker, mark the first fixing.

^ Measure and mark the second fixing 40mm from the first.

CAUTION:
To avoid cross-contamination (galvanic corrosion), this repair must be carried out using either a new unused drill bit or an aluminum repair-only drill bit.

4. Using a new unused or aluminum repair-only 6.9mm drill bit, drill through the two (2) marked fixings.

5. Clean and de-burr the drilled holes.

6. Remove all swarf from the drilling and de-burring processes.

7. Prime paint the raw edge of the drilled holes.

NOTE:
The prime paint must be dry before installing the
rivets.

NOTE:
Make sure the rivets are fully seated.

8. Install the two (2) new rivets to the drilled holes.

9. Remove and discard the tape from the air box.

10. Refer to Workshop Manual section 303-14: Electronic Engine Controls, and install the Engine control module (ECM).
