Body - Water Leaks At The D-Pillar

Water Ingress via the 'D' Pillar

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

CONDITION SUMMARY:

Situation:
Water leaking into the luggage compartment may lead to water getting into the Audio Unit Amplifier, causing the amplifier to malfunction. This water ingress may be caused by the area at the bottom of the 'D' pillar allowing water to get into the body seam and transfer to the luggage compartment. In some cases, this area requires extra sealing.

Action:
In the event of a customer concern of the above, refer to the Repair Procedure outlined below to seal the body seam.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

SEAL LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT SEAM





1. Refer to Workshop Manual section 501-11: Glass, Frames, and Mechanisms > Removal and Installation > Rear Quarter Window Glass, and remove the left-hand (LH) exterior D pillar. (Figure 1)





2. Remove the LH side luggage compartment aperture seal. (Figure 2)





3. Remove the LH luggage compartment hinge finishers. (Figure 3)





4. Remove the LH rubber seal.

CAUTION:
Use care to avoid damage to the paint work or vehicle body panels.





5. Using a suitable tool, push the original sealer into the aperture. (Figure 5)

NOTE:
Ensure the area is completely dry and free from dirt.

6. Clean the area to be sealed with a suitable cloth.





7. Using a suitable adhesive tape, protect the LH side of the rear window screen seal in the area of the repair. (Figure 6)





8. Using a suitable PU sealer, seal the area, ensuring the sealer fills the gap completely. (Figures 7, 8)

NOTE:
Do not remove too much sealer from the area or create gaps in the sealing when removing excess sealant.





9. Using a suitable cloth remove excess sealer. (Figure 9)

10. Ensure a smooth finish to the sealer.





11. Remove the adhesive tape. (Figure 6)

NOTE:
If there is still evidence of water ingress go back to step 8 and continue the process. If there is no evidence of water ingress continue from step 14.

12. Water test to verify that the leak has stopped.

13. Refer to Workshop Manual section 501-11: Glass, Frames, and Mechanisms > Removal and Installation > Rear Quaner Window Glass, and install the exterior D pillar. (Figure 1)

14. Install the luggage compartment hinge finishers.

15. Install the luggage compartment aperture seal.

16. Repeat steps 1 - 16 to the right-hand side.
