Fig. 3 Cylinder head bolt tightening sequence:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Remove air cleaner, fuel pipe between carburetor and pump, and vacuum advance hose.
3. Remove rocker cover as described under ``Rocker Cover, Replace.''
4. Remove rocker arms, bridges and pivots, and the push rods, keeping components in order for assembly. Alternately loosen rocker arm bolts, one turn at a time, to prevent damaging bridges.
5. Remove power steering and air pump mounting bolts, as equipped, and secure pumps aside.
6. Remove intake manifold as described under ``Intake Manifold, Replace.''
7. Remove exhaust manifold as described under ``Exhaust Manifold, Replace.''
8. On models with A/C, proceed as follows:
a. Remove compressor belt idler pulley and bracket.
b. Loosen alternator belt and disconnect alternator bracket from cylinder head.
c. Remove compressor mounting bolts and position compressor aside.
9. On all models, disconnect spark plug wires and temperature sending unit electrical connector.
10. Remove spark plugs, ignition coil and coil bracket.
11. Remove cylinder head bolts, cylinder head and gasket. On some engines, cylinder head bolts installed on the spark plug (left) side of the engine were improperly hardened and may break under the bolt head or in the thread area. Whenever a broken bolt is found, all bolts on the spark plug side of the engine should be replaced. Engines included are code Nos. 310C06 through 310C14. The engine code is stamped on a machined surface on the distributor side of the engine.
12. Ensure that head and block gasket surfaces are clean and free from old gasket material, coat both sides of replacement gasket with suitable sealer and position gasket on block with ``TOP'' mark facing up.
13. Ensure that gasket is properly seated on block, install cylinder head and head bolts, and torque bolts to specifications in sequence shown in Fig. 3. Apply suitable sealer to threads of left front head bolt (11), prior to installation.
14. Remove temperature sending unit and leave removed until cooling system is filled to allow air to escape from engine block.
15. Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation.
