Horn Switch: Service and Repair

Some steering shafts have metric steering wheel nut threads. Check and identify shaft thread type before installing a replacement steering wheel nut. Metric steering shafts have an identifying groove in the steering wheel splines.




CJ, SCRAMBLER & WRANGLER

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Ensure front wheels are in straight ahead position.
3. Remove rubber boot, if equipped, and horn from steering wheel. Rotate button until lock tabs on button align with notches in contact cup, then pull upward and remove from steering wheel.
4. Remove steering wheel nut and washer.
5. Remove horn button receiver bushing attaching screws, then the bushing.
6. Remove horn button receiver and contact plate.
7. Paint or scribe an alignment mark on steering wheel and steering shaft for installation.
8. Using a suitable puller, remove steering wheel from steering shaft.
