EXCEPT WRANGLER

Manual front drive hubs are used on models 208 or 300 part-time front wheel drive transfer case assemblies only. Three different front drive hub assemblies are used. Hub assembly model M243, is used on 1980-81 CJ and Scrambler models, hub model M253, is used on 1982-86 CJ and Scrambler models, hub model M247, is used on Cherokee, Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer and all truck models. All three hub assembly models are manually locked or unlocked. These hubs are serviced as an assembly or subassembly only. Do not attempt to disassemble these units. If an entire hub or subassembly is defective, replace the entire assembly or subassembly. The hubs may be removed for cleaning and inspection purposes and for periodic lubrication only.

MODELS M243 & 253

1. Remove bolts and lock washers securing hub body to axle hub.
2. Remove gasket and hub body. Do not turn hub control dial after removing hub body.
3. Remove retaining ring, hub clutch and bearing assembly.
4. Clean and inspect all components for wear or damage. Replace as necessary. Do not turn hub control dial until after hub control dial is installed. The hub clutch nut and cup can be damaged if dial is rotated while the hub is off the vehicle.
5. Apply a light coat of suitable lubricant to all hub components.
6. Install bearing assembly and hub clutch with retaining ring on axle shaft.
7. Install hub body and gasket. Install tabbed lockwashers and bolts into hub body and axle. Torque bolts to 30 ft. lbs.
8. Raise and support front of vehicle, with dial in free position, rotate wheels. If wheels drag, check hub for correct installation.
9. Lower vehicle.

MODEL M247

1. Remove socket head screws, axle hub retaining ring and axle shaft retaining ring.
2. Remove hub clutch assembly.
3. Clean and inspect all components for wear or damage. Replace as necessary.
4. Apply a light coat of suitable lubricant to all hub components.
5. Install hub clutch, axle hub retaining ring and axle shaft retaining ring.
6. Install new O-ring into hub body and position into clutch. Install socket head screw and torque to 30 inch lbs.
7. Raise and support front of vehicle, turn dial to free position and rotate wheels. If wheels drag, check hub for correct installation.
8. Lower vehicle.
