Removal and Replacement

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REMOVAL (2 WHEEL DRIVE)

1. Raise the vehicle.

2. Mark rear propeller shaft and yoke for assembly alignment.

3. Disconnect and remove rear propeller shaft.

4. Remove inspection cover from converter housing.

5. Mark converter drive plate and converter for assembly alignment.

6. Remove bolts attaching converter to drive plate.

7. Support transmission using transmission jack. Retain transmission on jack with safety chain.

8. Remove bolts attaching rear crossmember to transmission and side sill.

9. Disconnect exhaust pipe at converter.

10. Lower transmission slightly and disconnect oil cooler lines. Cap the lines at transmission.

11. Disconnect backup light switch wire and speedometer cable.

12. Disconnect transmission linkage.

13. Remove bolts attaching transmission to engine.

14. Move transmission and converter rearward to clear crankshaft.

15. Hold converter in position and lower transmission assembly until converter housing clears engine.

INSTALLATION

1. Rotate converter until pump drive slots in converter hub are vertical. Carefully insert converter hub into pump.

2. Raise transmission and align converter with drive plate. Refer to assembly alignment marks.

3. Move transmission forward and into place.

4. Install two converter housing lower attaching bolts and tighten bolts to draw housing to engine.

5. Install drive plate-to-converter attaching bolts.

6. Install remaining converter housing-to-engine attaching bolts.

7. Connect oil cooler lines.

8. Connect backup light switch wire.

9. Connect transmission linkage.

10. Raise transmission and install rear crossmember.

11. Install speedometer cable.

12. Install inspection cover.

13. Connect exhaust pipe to converter.

14. Connect rear propeller shaft. Refer to alignment marks made during removal.

15. Lower the vehicle.

16. Fill transmission to correct level. Refer to Fluid Level and Condition for refill procedure.
Procedures

17. Road test to check transmission for proper operation.
