EVAPORATOR FREEZE-UP OR WATER LEAK

Some 1986 Comanche models equipped with A/C may experience one or both of the following conditions.

Fig. 1 - Capillary Tube Position:

EVAPORATOR FREEZE-UP

If the evaporator is freezing up, it may be due to the A/C temperature control thermostat capillary tube not being in the heater-A/C housing. If the tube is not completely inserted into the guide tube port, the thermostat will not receive the actual evaporator air temperature which will keep the clutch from cycling.

The thermostat capillary tube must be in the guide tube port all the way to the red band on the tube (Fig. 1). If the tube is not fully inserted, service as follows.
PROCEDURE

Disconnect the battery negative cable.

Remove the lower instrument panel.

CAUTION: It is extremely important that the capillary tube is not bent or kinked during installation. Hold the capillary tube, by hand, close to the guide tube port. Insert only a small amount of the capillary tube at a time.

Fig. 2 - Gripping the Guide Tube with Pliers:

Grip the guide tube with pliers (Fig. 2) and very gently rock it up and down while pushing on the capillary tube. This will change the direction the guide tube is pointing, allowing the capillary tube to slip around the evaporator tubes.
WATER LEAK FROM EVAPORATOR HOUSING

A water leak inside the passenger compartment from the heater-A/C housing may be caused by flashing obstructing the evaporator housing drain hole. Correct this condition as follows.

Fig. 3 - Flashing Removal:

PROCEDURE

Locate evaporator drain hose at passenger side lower instrument panel.

Remove the drain hose from the evaporator housing drain outlet (A).
Remove the flashing obstructing the hole by inserting an 11.5 mm (15/32 inch) diameter drill bit in the outlet opening and twisting it by hand to clear the hole.

Remove the drill bit and install the evaporator drain hose on the drain outlet.
