MERCON (R) TRANSMISSION-TRANSFER CASE FLUID

Mercon (R) automatic transmission fluid is now recommended for use in all 1987-88 Cherokee/ Wagoneer automatic transmissions. This same fluid is also recommended for use in transfer case Models 231 and 242.


Mercon (R) is compatible with Dexron (R) II and can be used to top off a transmission/transfer case previously filled with a Dexron-type fluid.


The new Mercon (R) fluid will be the only fluid supplied by your PDC when existing stocks of the current fluid are used up.


AXLE LUBRICANTS


An SAE 75W-90, API grade GL 5 axle gear lubricant will be used for all standard duty applications.


A new synthetic-type, SAE 80W-140 hypoid gear lubricant will, be used for trailer towing applications. The new synthetic is the only lubricant recommended for trailer tow applications. Part number for the new lubricant is 8982 200 945.


The Trac-Lok axle in 1988 models requires an additive, part number 8983 100 003. The additive is compatible with the standard and new synthetic axle lubricants.
DIFFERENTIAL RING GEAR BOLT TORQUE


The ring gear used in 1988, Model 35C rear axles has a thicker cross section than prior year models. As a consequence, ring gear bolt torque has been updated to accomodate the new, heavier gear. The new bolt torque specification is 95-122 N-m (70-90 ft.lbs.).


NOTE: The differential case used in 1988, Model 35C rear axles has also been changed. The new ring gear and gear case can only be used as a set. They are not interchangeable with the components used previously.


PAINT INFORMATION


The Jeep paint code for the Dark Argent accent color used on 1988 models is 88P16.
