Input Shaft-Mainshaft Assembly





Install the pilot bearing race (29) in the input shaft (30) with an arbor press and tool B.V.I. FM. 12.





Install the front bearing (31) on the input shaft (30) with an arbor press and tools B.V.l. FM. 12 and B.V.I. FM. 13.





Install first gear bearing (18), bearing spacer (14) and second gear bearing (13) on the mainshaft (20). Be sure the spacer is installed between the two bearings.

Install the second gear (19) on the mainshaft.

Assemble and install the hub (17) and first- second synchronizer (16) on the mainshaft. Install the synchronizer with pins (a) toward the rear of the mainshaft.

Install the first gear (15) and the spacer (12) on the mainshaft.

Install the original or a replacement rear bearing preload shim (11) on the mainshaft as follows:

^ Use the original shim only when all of the original transmission components (except bearings and races) are being reused.

^ Use a replacement shim that is 4.55 mm (0.179-in.) thick if any transmission case, gear, shaft, synchronizer, or shift fork/rail has been replaced.





Install the mainshaft rear bearing (10) with an arbor press and tool B.V.I. FM. 13.

CAUTION: Do not exceed 3000 kg. (6600 lbs.) force when pressing the bearing onto the mainshaft.

Install the third gear needle bearing (21) and the third gear (22) on the front of the mainshaft.





Install the third-fourth synchronizer hub (24) on the mainshaft but do not install the synchronizer at this time.

Position a replacement spring washer (25) and lock ring (26) on the mainshaft.

Seat the lock ring (26) as follows:

^ Mount the mainshaft in an arbor press.





^ Place tool B.V.l. FM. 13 over the end of the mainshaft and against the lock ring (26).

^ Apply just enough press pressure to align the lock ring with the groove in the mainshaft.

^ Secure the lock ring (26) in the groove by compressing it with pliers.

^ Release the press and remove the press tools and mainshaft.

Install original or replacement pilot bearing shims (27) on the mainshaft as follows:

^ Use the original shims only if the original third gear, synchronizer hub, spring washer and lock ring are being reused.

^ Use replacement shims with a total thickness of 2.80 mm (0.110-in.) if any of the above components have been replaced.





Install the pilot bearing (28) on the mainshaft with an arbor press and tool B.V.I. FM. 14.

Install the third-fourth synchronizer (23) on the hub (24). Align the two components according to the reference marks made during disassembly.

NOTE: Do not install the rear bearing retainer (8), reverse gear (7) or reverse gear nut (5) on the mainshaft at this time.
