Engine: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery cables and remove the battery, then remove air cleaner and hood.
2. Drain cooling system and remove upper and lower radiator hoses.
3. Remove fan shroud.
4. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect transmission cooling lines from radiator.
5. On all models, remove radiator. On vehicles equipped with A/C, remove A/C condenser.
6. Remove fan assembly, then install a 5/16 x 1/2 inch bolt to retain fan pulley to water pump flange.
7. Disconnect heater hoses, throttle linkages, throttle valve rod and cruise control cable, if equipped.
8. Disconnect wires from starter motor.
9. Disconnect CEC wiring harness connector.
10. Disconnect fuel line from fuel pump and fuel return line from fuel filter.
11. On vehicles equipped with A/C, remove service valves and cap compressor ports.
12. On vehicles equipped with power brakes, remove vacuum check valve from brake booster.
13. On vehicles equipped with power steering, disconnect and plug hoses from steering gear, then drain power steering pump reservoir.
14. On all vehicles, disconnect all wires and vacuum hoses which will interfere with engine removal. Label wires and hoses to aid installation.
15. Raise and support vehicle, then remove starter motor.
16. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold.
17. Remove transmission housing inspection cover.
18. On automatic transmission equipped vehicles, mark torque converter to driveplate location, then remove converter to driveplate attaching bolts.
19. On all vehicles, remove upper transmission housing to engine attaching bolts and loosen bottom bolts.
20. Remove engine mount to support bracket attaching bolts, then install a suitable engine hoist.
21. Raise engine and support transmission with a suitable jack.
22. Remove the remaining transmission to engine attaching bolts.
23. Raise engine and remove from vehicle.
24. Reverse procedure to install.
