IMPORTANT:
Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer used vehicle inventory. Dealers should complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also perform this recall on vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process.

Subject

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on about 467,400 of the above vehicles may not be capable of detecting a deteriorating catalytic converter. Also, under certain conditions, some catalytic converters may be subject to mechanical degradation that causes a rattle.

Repair

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) must be reprogrammed (flashed) and the catalytic converter must be inspected and, if necessary, replaced.

NOTE:
The warranty on the catalytic converter is being extended for 12 months/12,000 miles from the date the recall service is performed. If a vehicle returns (during the original or the extended catalytic converter warranty period) after this recall has been performed with the MIL illuminated and DTC code P0420 set, the catalytic converter must be replaced.

IMPORTANT:
Owners involved in this recall will be notified in phases. Owners of 1996 XJ and ZJ vehicles equipped with a 4.0 liter engine will be notified first. THE SOFTWARE TO REPROGRAM THE PCM FOR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.5 LITER ENGINE IS CURRENTLY NOT AVAILABLE. ACCORDINGLY, OWNERS OF VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.5 LITER ENGINE WILL BE NOTIFIED AT A LATER DATE.

Parts Information

IMPORTANT:
Very few vehicles are expected to require replacement of the catalytic converter. Therefore, no parts will be distributed to involved dealers initially. Parts may be ordered as needed to support scheduled repairs.

Vehicle Lists, Global Recall System, VIP and Dealer Follow Up

All involved vehicles have been entered into the DealerCONNECT Global Recall System (GRS) and Vehicle Information Plus (VIP) for dealer inquiry as needed.

GRS provides involved dealers with an updated VIN list of their incomplete vehicles. The owner's name, address and phone number are listed if known. Completed vehicles are removed from GRS within several days of repair claim submission.

To use this system, click on the "Service" tab and then click on "Global Recall System." Your dealer's VIN list for each recall displayed can be sorted by: those vehicles that were unsold at recall launch, those with a phone number, city, zip code, or VIN sequence.

Dealers must perform this repair on all unsold vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also use the VIN list to follow up with all owners to schedule appointments for this repair.

Recall VIN lists may contain confidential, restricted owner name and address information that was obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles of various states. Use of this information is permitted for this recall only and is strictly prohibited from all other use.
