The camshaft is driven by an iron crankshaft gear meshed with a fiber gear attached to the camshaft, Fig. 6. To remove the fiber timing gear requires the removal of the camshaft. Position camshaft and timing gear assembly in suitable press plate and press camshaft out of gear using appropriate size socket and arbor press. Thrust plate must be properly aligned with camshaft woodruff key when pressing shaft out of gear or damage to thrust plate may result.
Reverse procedure to install timing gear. End clearance of thrust plate should be 0.0015 - 0.0050 inch. If clearance is less than .0015 inch, replace spacer ring. If clearance is more than .0050 inch, replace thrust plate.
