SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE
This I.S. Note contains updated information on servicing the T4 and T5 transmissions in 1982-83 Jeep vehicles.

Information
Alternate procedures and S.R.T. information for servicing 1982-83 Jeep T4-T5 transmissions equipped with a press fit instead of slip fit-type 3-4 synchronizer hub. Press fit hubs were used in some 1982 and in all 1983 production transmissions and are the only type of hub available for service replacement use.
Refer to the alternate removal/installation procedures in this I.S. Note when servicing a press fit-type 3-4 synchronizer hub. Also make a note of these alternate procedures under the output shaft geartrain disassembly/assembly procedures on pages 2B-9 through 2B-14 and 2B-23 through 2B-24 of the 1982 Jeep Technical Service Manual.
PROCEDURE
Removal
1. Remove the output shaft geartrain as outlined in Chapter 2B of the 1982 Jeep Technical Service Manual.
2. Remove the thrust bearing washer from the output shaft and scribe alignment marks on the 3-4 synchronizer hub, sleeve and output shaft for assembly reference.

3. Position the jaws of the split-type puller such as Tool J-22912 between the third and second gears on the mainshaft (Fig. 1). Be sure the puller jaws bear firmly against the back of the third gear.
4. Mount the output shaft geartrain assembly in an arbor press (Fig. 1) and remove the 3-4 synchronizer hub and sleeve and third gear as an assembly.
5. Complete output shaft geartrain disassembly as outlined in the service manual.
Installation
1. Assemble the output shaft geartrain up to the 3-4 synchronizer hub, sleeve, and third gear as outlined in the service manual.
2. Install the third gear on the output shaft and install the 3-4 blocking ring on the third gear.
3. Align the scribe marks on the 3-4 synchronizer hub, sleeve, and output shaft and start the hub onto the output shaft.

4. Press the 3-4 hub and sleeve onto the output shaft until seated using an arbor press (Fig. 2).
NOTE: Be sure to align the 3-4 blocking ring with the 3-4 synchronizer sleeve before seating the hub and sleeve.
5. Install the fourth gear blocking ring in the 3-4 sleeve and complete output shaft geartrain assembly as outlined in the service manual.
NOTE: Use gear lubricant 89 83 000 000 (case of 12, one quart cans), only to refill or add lubricant to T4/T5 transmissions during normal maintenance or after service. This is the only lubricant recommended for use in these transmissions. Do not use this lubricant in any other AMC transmission and do not attempt to use this lubricant in any AMC axle or transfer case. Recommended lubricants for other transmissions and axles remain unchanged.
