Safety Recall - Power Tailgate Window: Overview

No. JE8707

May, 1988

To: All Jeep/Eagle Dealers

Subject:
Jeep/Eagle Safety Recall # 8707 (TAILGATE 15) -- Wagon Power Tailgate Window -- Final Repair Procedure

Models:
Full Size 1970-1988 Jeep Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer and Cherokee Equipped With Power Tailgate Window

Reference:
Preliminary recall notification and interim service instructions to Jeep/Eagle Dealers and involved owners, December, 1987/January, 1988.

The enclosed instructions describe repair requirements for the subject recall. Involved full size Jeep Wagons equipped with power tailgate windows must receive the service to ensure that the rear tailgate key cylinder will freely return to the "off" position when the key is released. This service will be provided without charge.

Note:
The recall service is to be provided to the owner free of charge regardless of whether or not the tailgate window system is operative at the time of service.

If the owner requests repair of an inoperative window system, this is not included in the free recall service and requires payment by the owner. If the owner does not authorize this repair, complete the recall service only, and enter the words, "inoperative window system" on the recall service claim. Use the applicable supplier code for inoperative window system listed in the Completion Reporting and Reimbursement section of this letter.

These instructions supersede the interim inspection and service instructions contained in the referenced preliminary dealer notification of December, 1987.

There air procedure includes several important steps to ensure return of the key toward the "off" position when released:

- Installation of a new key cylinder base, (all vehicles). The new base repositions the cylinder cover pivot point from the 12 o'clock to the 4 o'clock location so that the spring loaded cover will bear against the key toward the "off" position.

- Installation of a new key cylinder cover (1970 through 1981 model vehicles). The cover on these earlier models has a smaller diameter key cylinder hole which could interfere with free rotation of the key cylinder if corrosion forms around the hole. Cover replacement is also required on any later models having a weak or broken cover return spring or severe corrosion.

- Cleaning and lubrication of the key cylinder and the cylinder cover pivot area prior to installation.

- Rotation of the key cylinder tumblers 180 degrees, requiring the key to be inserted with its notched edge up. This also aids in returning the key to the "off" position when released.

Because of parts procurement timing, initial parts shipments will be made to dealers separately by geographic area. Four shipments will e made, divided by Jeep/Eagle Parts Distribution Center (PDC) coverage areas. Owners in each area will be notified of the recall service requirement after affected dealers in their area have received initial parts shipments. A schedule is enclosed with this letter listing parts distribution and owner notification dates.

Details of the final repair requirements are contained in the following sections.

Vehicle List

Listings of involved vehicles will not be provided for this recall. Instead, vehicles eligible for the service can be identified as all 1970 through 1987 model year full size Jeep wagons equipped with power tailgate windows and all similarly equipped 1988 models with the tailgate key cylinder dust cover pivot at the 12 o' clock position.
