Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
EXCESSIVE PEDAL TRAVEL1. Worn brake lining.
2. Shoe and lining knock back after cornering or rough road travel.
3. Piston and shoe and lining assembly not properly seated or positioned.
4. Air leak or insufficient fluid in system or caliper.
5. Loose wheel bearing adjustment.
6. Damaged or worn caliper piston seal.
7. Improper booster pushrod adjustment.
8. Shoe out of flat more than 0.005 inch.
9. Rear brake automatic adjusters inoperative.
10. Improperly ground rear brake shoe and lining assemblies.
BRAKE ROUGHNESS OR CHATTER; PEDAL PUMPING
1. Excessive lateral run-out of rotor.
2. Rotor excessively out of parallel.
EXCESSIVE PEDAL EFFORT
1. Frozen or seized pistons.
2. Brake fluid, oil or grease on linings.
3. Shoe and lining worn below specifications.
4. Proportioning valve malfunction.
5. Booster inoperative.
6. Leaking booster vacuum check valve.
PULL, UNEVEN OR GRABBING BRAKES
1. Frozen or seized pistons.
2. Brake fluid, oil or grease on linings.
3. Caliper out of alignment with rotor.
4. Loose caliper attachment.
5. Unequalized front tire pressure.
6. Incorrect front end alignment.
7. Lining protruding beyond end of shoe.
BRAKE RATTLE
1. Excessive clearance between shoe and caliper or between shoe and splash shield.
2. Shoe hold-down clips missing or improperly positioned.
HEAVY BRAKE DRAG
1. Frozen or seized pistons.
2. Operator riding brake pedal.
3. Incomplete brake pedal return due to linkage interference.
4. Faulty booster check valve holding pressure in hydraulic system.
5. Residual pressure in front brake hydraulic system.
CALIPER BRAKE FLUID LEAK
1. Damaged or worn caliper piston seal.
2. Scores in cylinder bore.
3. Corrosion build-up in cylinder bore or on piston surface.
4. Metal clip in seal groove.
NO BRAKING EFFECT WHEN PEDAL IS DEPRESSED
1. Piston and shoe and lining assembly not properly seated or positioned.
2. Air leak or insufficient fluid in system or caliper.
3. Damaged or worn caliper piston seal.
4. Bleeder screw open.
5. Air in hydraulic system or improper bleeding.
REAR BRAKES LOCKING ON APPLICATION
On brake system equipped with a proportioning or rear pressure regulator valve, should the valve malfunction, rear brakes may receive excess pressure, resulting in wheel lock-up.
