It is not necessary to remove rear wheels to facilitate axle shaft replacement.
1. Remove axle flange nuts, lockwashers, and split washers retaining axle shaft flange.
2. Remove axle shaft from housing.
3. If wheel bearings are to be replaced, proceed as follows:
a. Bend lip of lockwasher and remove locknut and lockwasher.
b. Raise and support vehicle.
c. Remove adjusting nut, outer wheel bearing and pull the wheel straight off the axle.
d. Service wheel bearings as required.
e. Reverse procedure to install, then adjust wheel bearings as described in "Wheel Bearings, Adjust."
4. Install new gasket on hub.
5. Install axle shaft and tighten nuts securely. It may be necessary to rotate wheel hub to align axle shaft splines with differential splines.
