Emissions Maintenance Light: Service and Repair

On 1983 California CJ models, with 4-151/2.5L engine, an emission maintenance lamp will illuminate at 30,000 mile intervals to indicate the need for oxygen sensor service. After performing the required service, then emission maintenance switch must be reset. The switch is located in the engine compartment on the left hand side of the dash panel between the upper and lower speedometer cables. To reset, turn the spring loaded reset screw counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn to the reset detent.
