Compressor Clutch: Service and Repair

Removal

R & R Compressor Shaft Nut:




1. Remove the compressor shaft nut.

Remove Compressor Clutch Plate:




2. Remove clutch front plate using a suitable puller.
3. Remove the compressor shaft key and shims.

R & R Snap Ring:




4. Remove the external pulley retaining snap ring. Remove the internal bearing snap ring (f equipped).

Install Shaft Protector:




5. Install puller jaws into the bearing snap ring groove.
6. Install shaft protector over the compressor shaft.

Removing Compressor Pulley:




7. Install the puller plate to the jaws
8. Pull the pulley from the compressor housing.
9. Remove the coil lead wires from the compressor housing.

R & R Coil Retaining Snap Ring:




10. Remove the coil retaining snap ring and remove the coil from the compressor housing.


Installation


R & R Coil Lead Wire:




1. Install the compressor coil and retaining snap ring.
2. Secure the coil wires to the compressor housing.

Installing Pulley:




3. Install the pulley to the compressor housing using a suitable driver.

R & R Snap Ring:




4. Install pulley and bearing snap rings.
5. Install original shims and shaft key. If original spacers are not available, use a stack of shims that equal approximately 0.065 inch.

Installing Front Plate:




6. Install the front plate to the compressor shaft using a suitable driver.

R & R Compressor Shaft Nut:




7. Install the shaft nut and torque to 25-30 ft.lbs. (34-40 N-m)

Checking Air Gap:




8. Check the air gap between the front plate and the pulley with a feeler gauge. The gap should be 0.016-0.031 inch.
- If the air gap does not meet specifications, remove the front plate and adjust the shim thickness accordingly.
