Service Procedure
^ Before proceeding with the following service, inspect the windshield frame for cracking at the driver's side wiper pivot mounting boss (the area around the nut securing the pivot to the frame). If cracking has already occurred, the windshield frame will have to be replaced using normal service procedures.^ Currently available replacement windshield frames already have reinforcements (double metal thickness) at the wiper pivot mounting areas. Therefore, the reinforcement supplied in the recall package is not required if the frame is replaced during this service, or if a reinforced frame has recently been installed.
^ New linkage must be installed on all involved vehicles including those with a reinforced replacement frame.
Proceed with the recall service procedure as follows:
1. Operate the windshield wipers and cycle to the park position. Mark the Park position of the wiper blades by applying a section of masking tape to the windshield.
2. Remove both wiper arms.
3. Remove the nuts attaching the pivots to the windshield frame.
4. Remove the necessary hard or soft top components from the windshield frame to allow the frame to be folded forward.
5. Place a protective cover over the hood and fold the windshield forward on the hood.
Working from inside the passenger compartment:
6. Disconnect the wiper motor drive link from the pivot link.
7. Remove the 3 wiper motor mounting screws.
8. Remove motor wiring clip from base of windshield frame.
9. Remove the 4 inboard screws retaining the seal to the bottom of the windshield frame. (The protruding screw ends interfere with pivot link assembly removal and installation).
10. Remove motor and drive link clear of frame.
11. Remove the C" clip retaining the drive link to the motor crank and remove the drive link.
Caution:
Do not remove the nut attaching the crank to the motorshaft Removal of the crank is not required and doing so will disturb the properly indexed crank position.
12. Remove the pivot link assembly through the access hole on the left side of the windshield frame.
Note:
At this point, check inside the windshield frame at the pivot areas. If the frame has recently been replaced, it may already have individual reinforcements (double metal thickness) at the pivot mounting areas. If so, the reinforcement in the recall pads package is not required -- proceed to Step 17 to install the new linkage.
13. With a dry cloth, thoroughly clean the supplied reinforcement and the inner windshield frame at the pivot mounting areas.
14. Thoroughly mix the supplied, two-part epoxy.
^ Pull off the divider strip from the epoxy pouch.
^ Using the rounded edge of the divider strip (or other suitable round-edge tool), move the epoxy material back and forth in the pouch (about 5 minutes) until the two parts are thoroughly mixed to a uniform green color.
^ Move epoxy to one end of the pouch and reinstall the divider.
^ Use scissors to cut off a small corner of the pouch to dispense the epoxy.
15. Apply a 1/8" bead of epoxy around both raised pivot bosses of the reinforcement and 2 beads (about 2 inches long) at the center.
16. Insert the reinforcement through the access hole in the windshield frame and position against frame, aligning the mated pivot holes.
Note:
Be careful to avoid wiping off epoxy when installing reinforcement.
17. Insert supplied pivot linkage through access hole.
^ To install pivot link, turn the right hand pivot toward the center of the link and feed it into the access hole. (The right pivot is the end of the link without the ball for the motor drive link.
^ Continue to insert pivot link with left hand pivot extended away from the center of link.
18. Install pivots into windshield frame holes making sure the tabs on the pivots are lined up in the hole notches.
^ "Roll" the pivots into the pivot holes with the left side pivot turned inward (toward the center) and the right side extended away from the center.
19. Raise the windshield frame and secure the pivots with the supplied nuts -- torque to 7.5 foot lbs.
20. Fold windshield frame forward to rest on hood.
21. Use channel lock pliers to attach the supplied drive link to the motor arm. Secure with C" clip.
22. Use channel lock pliers to attach socket end of drive link to the pivot link ball.
23. Secure the motor to the windshield frame.
24. Install the motor wiring clip and the 4 inboard seal retaining screws at the base of the windshield frame.
25. Spray a coating of silicone on the bottom seal surface.
26. Raise windshield frame, being careful not to pinch the wiring. Attach frame and roof components as required to complete the service.
