DRBII
For 1990 Chrysler Corporation has made available to its dealer technicians, a second generation, Chrysler designed diagnostic readout box. The DRBII, as it is called, must be used to gain access to the signals and data stream information available at the diagnostic connectors. The DRBII utilizes a cartridge containing the programming for all tests it must perform. Cartridges consist of a memory chip that works in conjunction with a microcomputer within the DRBII. By providing tests in cartridges, the DRBII can be updated to satisfy future vehicle diagnostic requirements.
JEEP/EAGLE ADAPTER
To properly interface with Jeep/Eagle vehicles, an adapter must be attached to the DRBII. The adapter is required as diagnostics on Jeep/Eagle products are performed Off-Board. All other Chrysler vehicles (NOT Jeep/Eagle) have On-Board diagnostic capabilities.
The adapter measures signals at the diagnostic connector and converts the signals into a form with which the DRBII can utilize in performing tests. A powerful computer itself, the adapter MUST be used with the DRBII to diagnose Jeep/ Eagle vehicles.
CONNECTING THE DRBII AND ADAPTER
For all supported diagnostics, the DRBII must be connected to the Jeep/Eagle Adapter and the Jeep/Eagle Adapter must be connected to the underhood diagnostic connectors. Diagnostic connectors for interface to the tester are located in the engine compartment of the vehicle.
The Jeep/Eagle adapter connects to the vehicle by two separate connectors; a 6 pin, and a 15 pin. The DRBII requires that the Jeep/Eagle adapter is attached to the diagnostic connector as a power source. Connections can be made in any order.
DRBII - JEEP/EAGLE PROBLEMS
The most common problem reported is one in which the screen is blank. If, after attaching the DRBII to the adapter and the adapter to the vehicle, the DRBII screen is blank, one or more of the following may be the possible cause.
- Cable Problems. Check to ensure that all connections are proper and fit snugly. Check to ensure that there are not broken or shorted wires in the cables.
- No Power. Check the diagnostic connector to ensure that there is power available to the adapter.
- Cartridge. Make sure that the cartridge is firmly installed in the DRBII.
Even in the case of a defective DRBII or adapter, generally, the screen should not be blank when everything is connected the first time. Trying the DRBII, adapter, and/or cartridge on another Jeep/Eagle vehicle may help isolate a faulty component.
