No 301T
March, 1991

To: All Jeep/Eagle Dealers

Subject: Safety Recall # 301T - Throttle Position Sensor

Models: 1989 and 1990 Model Year Jeep XJ (Cherokee, Wagoneer) and MJ
(Comanche) Vehicles Equipped With 4.0L MPI Engine and Automatic Transmission, Vehicles Built From May 1, 1989 Through June 6, 1990

The listed model vehicles may experience an intermittent high idle condition immediately following engine start. This is caused by a false signal from the throttle position sensor (TPS) which indicates that the throttle is not closed. The condition results from poor internal wire-to-connector crimping in the TPS.

To correct the condition, a new TPS must be installed and adjusted.

Important: Some of the involved vehicles may still be in dealer stock. Be sure to complete the service on these vehicles before retail delivery.

Parts will be supplied for this recall in accordance with the recently announced Recall Parts Pricing policy, as explained in the Parts section of this letter.

Also, for this recall, owner notification will be mailed in stages as sufficient parts for each stage are received. The first stage, to be mailed in March, will apply to owners of 1989 and 1990 Model Year vehicles built 1989. The next stage(s) will follow in the near future.
