Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

Flow of Diagnosis:

1. Get accurate description of complaint. Road test vehicle to verify. For further information use the DRIVEABILTY WORKSHEET and VEHICLE REPAIR HISTORY forms below.
2. Check TSB'S for manual updates, testing procedures, warranty and recall information.
3. Perform underhood inspection.
VISUALLY CHECK:
Vacuum hoses for splits, kinks, and proper routing.
Ignition wiring for cracking, hardness, and proper connections at both the distributor and spark plugs.
All wiring for proper connections, pinches and cuts.
Wiring harness for proper routing.
Check for missing components.
4. An electronic Fuel Feedback Tester (part No. ET-501) is available to help in diagnosing system problems. If this tester is not available, use diagnostic tests 1 through 12 in TESTING PROCEDURES/DIAGNOSTIC CHARTS. To perform a complete system diagnosis, diagnostic test 1 should be performed first, then succeed numerically until all 12 tests have been performed. The steps in each test provide a systematic evaluation of each component, and describe possible causes for an operational malfunction. After a repair has been completed, repeat the appropriate test to determine that the malfunction has been eliminated. The equipment required to perform the diagnostic tests is listed below:

- tachometer
- hand-held vacuum pump
- digital volt-ohmmeter (minimum input impedance of 10 meg-ohms)

5. See TESTING PROCEDURES/DIAGNOSIS BY SYMPTOM for symptom vehicle is exhibiting. Follow procedures as outlined for given symptom.

WARNING: When performing system diagnostic tests, the following safety precautions must be followed:
- Cut a piece of plexi-glass in the same shape as the air cleaner cover (at least .250 in. thick). After removing the air cleaner cover, place the plexi-glass on the air cleaner assembly, and tighten down the air cleaner wing nut.
- Always wear eye protection while performing the diagnostic tests.
- When the engine is running, keep hands and arms clear of drive belts, pulleys, and the cooling fan. Do not wear loose clothing, and do not stand in direct line with the cooling fan.
