50 ($32) 3-4 Shift Solenoid Circuit

NAME OF CODE
50 ($32) 3-4 Shift Solenoid Circuit

WHEN MONITORED
Continuously with the key on.

SET CONDITION
This code is set if the voltage detected on the 3-4 Shift Solenoid Control Circuit at the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is different than the expected voltage.

THEORY OF OPERATION
This solenoid is used to control the gear change from 3rd to 4th (OD). The PCM energizes the solenoid by grounding the 3-4 Shift Solenoid Control Circuit. The Solenoid receives its 12-volt supply from the transmission relay. The PCM will not allow 4th gear (OD) if the transmission oil temp is below 32 Degrees F. The PCM will also disable 4th gear if the transmission oil temperature goes above 269° F.

TRANSMISSION EFFECTS
The PCM turns off the transmission relay resulting in the transmission going into default mode (3rd gear). The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will illuminate.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
- Transmission relay failure
- Open or shorted transmission relay wiring
- Open or shorted 3-4 Shift Solenoid
- Open or shorted 3-4 Shift Solenoid
- Control Circuit wiring Corroded, damaged, pushed out, miswired, or disconnected connector(s)
- Internal controller failure (PCM)
