NO: 23-21-98

GROUP: Body

DATE: May 15, 1998

SUBJECT:
Front Seat Squeak

MODELS:

1997 - 1998 (TJ) Wrangler
1997 - 1998 (XJ) Cherokee

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

A squeaking noise may be present in either front seat. This noise could be caused by a lack of lubricant in the seat track or by movement between the seat frame and the foam cushion. An isolator material has been developed to separate the foam from the seat frame.

DIAGNOSIS:

Try to duplicate the problem while sitting in the seat. Rocking back and forth or moving side to side will generally enable you to duplicate the symptom. If the noise is coming from the seat, perform the Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 05013055AA Isolator
AR NPN Hog Rings
AR 04318066 Spray White Lube

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves lubricating the seat track and installing an isolator between the seat frame and the foam cushion.

1. Remove the seat from the vehicle and place it on a clean protected work bench.

2. Remove the seat bottom trim by disengaging the plastic "J" hooks from the front and sides of the bottom of the seat frame and unzipping the cushion. Slide the seat back release handle through the seat bottom cover and lift the cover.

3. Install the isolator over the seat frame as shown in Figure 1. Attach the isolator to the frame at the locations as shown( See Figure 2). Hog rings can be used for this. If hog rings are not available, pierce holes in the material and use nylon tie straps. The isolator needs to be attached to the frame to prevent movent which might occur as the operator enters and exits the vehicle.

4. Install the seat cover.

5. Lubricate the seat track using white lithium spray grease such as MOPAR p/n 04318066 or equivalent. Make sure to apply lubricant to the seat stops at the rear of the track.

6. Install the seat and tighten the outboard bolts to 33 Nm (25 ft. lbs.). Tighten the inboard bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Tighten the nuts to 33 Nm (25 ft.lbs.).
