Fuel Tank - Rattling/Knocking/Gurgling Noises

NO: 14-06-98

GROUP: Fuel

DATE: Dec. 11, 1998

SUBJECT:
Fuel Tank Rattle

MODELS:

1997 - 1998 (XJ) Cherokee

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

A rattling, knocking or gurgling noise may be present coming from inside the fuel tank. The noise can usually be heard with the tank between 3/4 and full. The noise may be the anti-siphon check ball moving in the filler neck.

DIAGNOSIS:

This noise can be hard to diagnose because it is dependant on the amount of fuel in the tank. If customers complain of a rattling, knocking or gurgling noise coming from inside the tank, perform the Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 05014530AA Spring

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves installing a spring that preloads the anti-siphon check ball the filler inlet in the fuel tank.

WARNING:
THE FUEL SYSTEM IN THIS VEHICLE IS UNDER CONSTANT PRESSURE EVEN WITH THE ENGINE OFF. THIS PRESSURE MUST BE RELEASED PRIOR TO SERVICING THE FUEL TANK

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Release the pressure from the fuel system. Refer to the appropriate service manual for this procedure.

3. Raise and support the vehicle on a hoist.

4. Remove the fuel tank skid plate, if equipped.

5. Remove the fuel hose shield.

6. Remove the tailpipe heat shield.

7. Remove the fuel tank fill hose and vent hose at the fuel filler.

8. Place a jack under the fuel tank to support it.

WARNING:
PLACE A SHOP TOWEL AROUND THE FUEL LINES TO CATCH ANY EXCESS FUEL.

9. Disconnect the fuel supply line from the extension near the front of the tank.

10. Disconnect the EVAP canister vent line.

11. Disconnect the fuel pump module electrical connector.

12. Remove the two fuel tank strap nuts and position the straps away from the tank.

13. Carefully lower the right side of the tank while feeding the fuel fill and vent hoses through the opening. Keep the left side of the tank higher than the right while lowering to prevent loss of fuel through the hoses. Do riot allow the hose openings to drop lower than the top of the tank.

14. Drain all of the remaining fuel from the tank using an approved fuel removal and storage station.

15. Remove the fuel pump module from the tank.

16. Place the tank on end with the fuel filler facing down. This will allow the anti-siphon check ball to move down into the filler inlet allowing access to install the spring.

17. Take the new spring, p/n 05014530AA, and compress it between your thumb and forefinger as shown in Figure 1. Install the spring by reaching through the fuel pump module opening and inserting the spring as shown and turning it 90 degrees and releasing it. The spring must be positioned as shown in Figure 2. If the spring is not positioned as shown, remove it and insert it again to assure the correct position.

18. Install the fuel pump module using a new gasket and tighten the locknut to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs).

19. Install the fuel tank by reversing the procedures used to remove it, including new fuel tank strap nuts.

Torque Specifications:

Fuel Hose Clamps 3 Nm (25 in. lbs.)
Fuel Tank Mounting Straps 10 Nm (90 in. lbs)
Fuel Pump Module Locknut 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs)

NOTE:
ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH DIESEL ENGINES, THE FUEL SYSTEM WILL REQUIRE BLEEDING AT THE INJECTOR PUMP. REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL FOR THIS PROCEDURE.

POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
