Front Shock Absorber Rattle/knock

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves installing a new lower shock absorber bolt with a revised torque specification.

MODELS:
1997 - 1999 (XJ) Cherokee

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A rattling or knocking noise may be present coming from the front suspension. This could be caused by a loose lower front shock absorber mounting bolt. A new bolt has been released which will allow the torque specification to be increased to 25-ft. lbs.

DIAGNOSIS:
Inspect the front lower shock absorber mounting bolts for looseness. The original torque specification is 16-ft. lbs.. If the bolts are loose, perform the Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

4 06502555 Bolt
4 06101695 Nut

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

2. Remove and discard both lower front shock absorber bolts and nuts on one side of the vehicle.

3. Install the new bolts, p/n 06502555, and nuts, p/n 06101695, and tighten them to 34 Nm (25-ft. lbs.).

4. Repeat this process for the opposite side.
