Speedometer Gear - Adapter Alignment

NO: 08-01-98

GROUP: Transmission

DATE: Jan. 23, 1998

SUBJECT:
Speedometer Gear Adapter Alignment

THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO TWO WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AISIN WARNER AW-4 TRANSMISSIONS.

MODELS:
1998 (XJ) Cherokee

DISCUSSION:
Changes to the output shaft and speedometer drive gear for 1998 have led to a requirement for a new speedometer gear adaptor alignment procedure. The new procedure involves installing the adapter and rotating the assembly until the speed sensor attaching screw is at the Nine O'clock position, (See Figure 1), install the retaining clamp to the nearest notch and tighten the screw to 11 Nm (100 in. lbs). Disregard the number of teeth on the gear and the index numbers on the adaptor housing. Installing the gear in any other location can lead to an improper fit between the drive and the driven gears and subsequent premature drive gear failures. This procedure applies to all current driven gear teeth configurations.
